Weekly Roundup for August 4th

This is my inaugural post for my “Weekly Roundup” which will consist of thoughts and a compilation of WordPress updates or security alerts from the week.

  • WordPress pushed a minor update on August 2nd with version 4.8.1. According to WordPress.org the update provides “29 maintenance fixes and enhancements.” What’s new is the Custom HTML widget. WP Tavern has a description of what the Custom HTML widget does.
  • If you didn’t realize that site security is a cat and mouse game over on the Wordfence blog there is a post entitled “Hackers Find Fresh WordPress Sites Within 30 Minutes” which will open your eyes. To sum it up you probably should not do a fresh install of a WordPress site on a new domain that is open to the world.
  • A WordPress site is not install and forget. An out of date site can easily be compromised and can be used by hackers to infect users and spread malicious software. If you have a site that is out of date and you can’t maintain it yourself or you have been abandoned by the original developer, contact me.

That is all I have for this week. If you have any questions about your WordPress site you can send me an email at john@panolatech.com or use the Request a Quote form if you have a particular project in mind.
