Client 101: Don’t Give Away the Keys to the Castle

When engaging the service of web developer there are certain things you should do to protect yourself. One of those is make sure you remain the owner of your domain. When you purchase your domain that becomes part of your business’s online identity.

How should you protect yourself?

  1. First you should signup with a domain seller, such as GoDaddy or Google as examples, that allow you to grant partial access to your account. That way you maintain control and don’t have to worry about someone shady transferring your domain out from under you.
  2. With GoDaddy once logged in go to the Account Settings which you can find in the upper right corner of the web page.
  3. On the Account Settings page you will see Delegate Access. Click there to access the next page.
  4. You will see two options to Request Access and on the right to Grant Access. Click on Grant Access.
  5. Enter the developers name and email and select the option to Products & Domains. When done click Invite.

Pretty simple measures to make sure you maintain control of your website. As always if you have questions you can contact me at john@panolatech.com.
